By Ray Silcox

Times have really changed for photographers. Less than a decade ago, most of us were still hand processing black and whites in a darkroom. Today, all but very few hard core film fanatics have switched to digital photography.

Reminiscing about those old days in the lab got us thinking about the music we listened to back then. Together with my teenage son and his friends we gathered up the best photo related tunes we could and found those “oldies” still rock.

As a teenager, we all made fun of that early 60’s crap our parents listened to. Our parents would fire back by telling us to wait until we have kids. Well guess what mom? Our kids like our music! So while Kodachrome is losing the battle in this digital age of photography… our music lives on.

Here are our top ten songs for photographers that still rock — from the classics to a couple of newer releases.

1) Paul Simon – Kodachrome
“Kodachrome gives us those nice bright colors, gives us the greens of summers, makes you think all the world’s a sunny day.”

2) The J. Geils Band – Centerfold
“Years go by I’m lookin’ through a girly magazine. And there’s my homeroom angel on the pages in-between.”

3) J. Geils Band – Freeze Frame
“There were no defects to be found, snapshot image froze without a sound.”

4) Def Leppard – Photograph
“Gotta photograph, picture of passion killer.”

5) Duran Duran – Girls On Film
“Lipstick cherry all over the lens as she’s falling.”

6) Nickelback – Photograph
“Look at this photograph. Every time I do it makes me laugh.”

7) The Who – Pictures of Lily
“Hey mister, have you ever seen, Pictures of Lily?”

8) Cars – Let the Good Times Roll
“Let the photos be old. Let them show what they want.”

9) Filter – Take My Picture
“Could you take my picture? Cuz I won’t remember.”

10) The Cure – Pictures of You
“I’ve been looking so long at these pictures of you that I almost believe that they’re real.”

I can’t believe its been four years since I last overhauled this website.

Yeah… I have been busy working on my other projects and letting my own sites suffer, but we finally tackled this three-day coding marathon to hopefully bring you a much more intuitive and pleasing site.

We tossed out the “ol’ nuke” site, pictured at right, and installed Word-Press in its place to post photography news and information and a full-fledged Coppermine photo gallery to support and feature our member’s photography skills. We also upgraded our portfolio to the latest G2 version of Gallery. This project was not near as easy as most upgrades come. There were no upgrade or import scripts to be found for Word-Press or Coppermine that matched our needs. I had to manually copy and paste each existing story and then edit the Coppermine database table by table.

Hopefully it will all be worth it. Word-Press is much easier to work with and offers many cool features and plugins that we may decide to give a shot.

We still got some tweaking to do and have a few other surprises and improvements planned here at SMYP. We welcome any and all comments and suggestions.

I hope you all enjoy the new format and decide to sign up and “Show Me Your Pix“.

Happy Shooting,
Ray

Well another year has passed by and I was reviewing my old website and realized I haven’t done much with it in the past few years. Updating the old site was always put on the back burner and it look so 90ish. It was definately time for a change.

I began looking at the sites I like to visit often and realized the thing that attracts me, and many others, to today’s popular sites is its personality and interactivity. So in my quest to be able to offer something along these lines, I offer you the opportunity to participate and contribute along with me at the new photosbyray.net.

New features include a photo gallery, where members can post their own works of art and share with the community and the world. Users can also submit news stories or discuss topics of interest to photographers in our forum.

You will find lots to see and do here within the next few weeks and hopefully this site will develop into a community for those interested in becoming better photographers — from the serious hobbiest to the professional shooter.

I hope you all enjoy the new format and decide to register and stay a while.

Enjoy,

SHAMOKIN — The News-Item has won statewide awards for writing and photography in the prestigious Keystone Press Awards contest, sponsored by the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association (PNA).

The News-Item won three awards in the 2003 competition, which involves work published the previous year. The newspaper competes in Division V (daily newspapers under 20,000 circulation), which involves dozens of newspapers throughout Pennsylvania.)

Managing Editor Jake Betz won a second place award in the Editorial category. Contestants were required to submit three editorials from specific dates throughout 2002. Betz’s winning editorials touted Northumberland County as the best location for a federal prison, argued that a single bid of $5,000 received for the Eagle Mill Clock did not accurately reflect the clock’s importance to the community and urged Northumberland County commissioners to adopt a policy to return bid bonds immediately — and uncashed — to unsuccessful bidders.

Betz has been employed at The News-Item since 1974, serving as managing editor since 1991. Assistant editor Dave Rompolski and staff writer Mark Gilger won a second place in the Ongoing News Story category for their coverage of land sale issues in Northumberland County. Newspapers were permitted to submit up to six stories regarding coverage of an ongoing issue.

The News-Item broke the story of county-owned properties being sold for as little as $25 despite market values of tens of thousands of dollars. While no wrongdoing was uncovered in a subsequent county-led investigation, some of the properties were rebid for sale. Also, the county has modified its process for selling properties on which taxes are owed and local municipalities are more closely studying their approval of sales within their jurisdictions.

Gilger and Rompolski are both veteran reporters for The News-Item. Gilger joined the staff as a part-time sports writer in November 1982 and was promoted to full-time staff writer in March 1983. Rompolski worked as a reporter from his hiring in 1992 until 2001, when he was promoted to his current position.

Staff photographer Ray Silcox won a second place in the Sports Photo category for his picture, “Agony of defeat.” The pictured showed the Shamokin Area High School girls’ soccer goalie, on her knees, her face buried in her hands and her head on the ground, after giving up a goal in overtime against Southern Columbia Area in a Pennsylvania eastern semi-final game. The soccer net and ball were visible behind the goalie, and a teammate was consoling her.

Silcox has worked for The News-Item’s parent company since February 1995, spending the first five years at the company’s sister publication, The Citizen-Standard, in Valley View. He moved to The News-Item three years ago.

This marks the fourth consecutive year in which The News-Item, which is owned by Times Shamrock Co., Scranton, has won at least one PNA award.

The Keystone Press Awards reinforce excellence by individuals in the newspaper profession by recognizing journalism that consistently provides relevance, integrity and initiative in serving readers, according to PNA. Further, the awards stimulate journalists to improve their craft and ultimately improve their communities.

His photograph of murder suspect Brandon Brown, his eyes closed, being led out of a court proceeding by police officers, won second place in the News Photo category. A crowd of youngsters and others were looking on in the background of the photograph, which was published Sept. 28. Silcox, who has been a newspaper photographer since 1983, has been with The News-Item for two years. He was previously employed with The Citizen-Standard, The News-Item’s sister weekly in Valley View, for six years.
